Get to Know This Role
The Research and Development department operates within the brewery to support and facilitate Innovation, Production, and Quality functions. Equally as important, it conducts novel research and works to procure new, developing materials and technologies for use in the brewery. As a supporting team member within the department, the R&D Intern is tasked with supporting R&D analysts and scientists with current research projects while maintaining good manufacturing practices and general upkeep of the laboratory. The R&D Intern works primarily in our state-of-the-art Research and Development Laboratory. The role requires close attention to detail, competence, and confidence in running high-end analytical instrumentation such as GC, LC, ICP, and more. Proper documentation and organization are also a must. Research projects may range from raw materials to finished product analysis and may change with frequency. Assignments will vary based on skill-level, areas of educational focus, business need and various projects throughout the year.

What You Will Do
  • Work closely with R&D team members, and with multiple departments that support and assist R&D projects, or require support from R&D
  • Train on all instruments in the lab, with the potential to select one instrument on which to train extensively, with the expectation of independently running the instrument.
  • Be responsible for a portion or the entirety of a project, which includes independent project planning, department coordination, experimentation, data analysis and reporting
  • Independently collects samples in production environment and adhere to good safety practices
  • Maintains lab supplies, cleanliness, and organization of the lab
  • Understands the scientific method, and maintains scientific rigor, responsibility and respect in the lab and around the brewery
  • Read peer-reviewed scientific and brewing literature regularly
  • Pay attention to detail, and provide accuracy and precision during experimentation, data recording, data analysis, and reporting
  • Prepare and give a technical presentation at the conclusion of the internship
     
  • This role is responsible for production and support the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Safe Quality Food (SQF) System as defined in the SQF Code. There will be Safety, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Food Safety and Food Security Training as required by Local, State, Federal and SNBC policies. All duties will be completed in a manner that is consistent with all aspects of Company Safety Rules, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and Safe Quality Foods (SQF). Employees shall report food safety & quality problems to personnel with authority to initiate action.

  • Must be a current Butte Community College or CSU, Chico State University student, majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food Science, or related science degree required 
  • Team Player – must be willing to help where needed

  • Positive Attitude while multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of the scientific method and its application to problem solving and experimentation
  • Commitment to maintaining scientific rigor, responsibility, and respect in the lab and around the brewery
  • Experience with Microsoft applications (particularly Excel and Microsoft Word)
  • Creativity and ingenuity in problem solving is desired
     
Additional Requirements to Consider Before Applying
  • You must be at least 21 years of age to work for Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
  • Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment, post offer background check
  • This is a full time, 8 - 10 week internship. Candidates must be available to work full time in June and August.
