Pool Maintenance/Gardener (Finance)



Job Description Summary

The Pool Maintenance/Gardener is responsible for the routine cleaning, chemical balancing management, inspection, and general upkeep of swimming pools, jacuzzi, algae control, chlorine safety and handling overall care for pond wildlife, pump and filter operation and repairs, vacuuming, removal of scum and mineral deposits, maintenance of waterfalls and fountains, and other maintenance duties. This role ensures that all pools are safe, sanitary, and fully operational to provide guests and residents with an exceptional aquatic experience.

Job Description

Principle duties and responsibilities (Essential Functions) include:

  • Test pool water daily (pH, chlorine, alkalinity, calcium hardness) and adjust chemical levels to meet health and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate logs of chemical treatments and water-quality readings.
  • Vacuum and brush pool surfaces, walls, and steps to remove debris, algae, and scale.
  • Skim water surface for floating debris; clean skimmer and pump baskets.
  • Backwash and clean filters according to manufacturer schedules.
  • Inspect and clean pool decks, drains, and surrounding areas.
  • Removal of all elements that influence the biological load on the fishpond (i.e Gray Herring, toads, tadpoles, etc.)
  • Assists in maintaining drainage, irrigation, and watering systems
  • Gather and remove litter.
  • Equipment Inspection & Repair
  • Examine pumps, filters, heaters, chlorinators, and automation systems daily for proper operation.
  • Perform routine minor repairs and part replacements (e.g., seals, O-rings, gaskets).
  • Report major equipment failures or safety hazards to Facilities Supervisor for prompt resolution.
  • Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations regarding pool safety and chemical handling.
  • Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and ensure proper storage, labeling, and disposal of pool chemicals.
  • Follow company safety protocols, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Respond courteously to guest or resident inquiries regarding pool hours, safety rules, and water quality concerns.
  • Notify Supervisor of recurring guest complaints or unusual observations.
  • Recordkeeping & Reporting
  • Complete maintenance checklists, service logs, and incident reports accurately and on time.
  • Assist with inventory control of pool supplies and chemicals; alert Supervisor when reorders are needed.
  • Ensure uniform and personal appearance are clean and professional; maintain confidentiality of proprietary information; protect company assets.
  • Display daily professional, courteous, attentive, helpful, and positive attitude towards all guests, fellow employees, and managers.
  • Ability to work cohesively with co-workers as part of a team to reach common goals.
  • Perform other job duties as requested by supervisors/managers as other job duties may be assigned as needed.
  • Understanding Sonesta's company and safety policies and maintain compliance with OSHA and the health department requirements.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in commercial or residential pool maintenance preferred.
  • Familiarity with pool filtration systems, pumps, heaters, and chemical handling.
  • Strong understanding of water chemistry and sanitation practices.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment inspection and minor repairs.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to interact professionally with team members and guests.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure while multitasking.
  • Familiarity with local laws and ordinances related to engineering and maintenance.
  • Self-driven and able to work independently.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age to serve alcohol.
  • Ability to provide and maintain a valid driver's license as the position may require the operation of motorized and electric vehicles.

License and Certifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Pool & Spa Operator (CPO) certification preferred or ability to attain within 6 months of hire.

Work Environment:

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Regular exposure to water, pool chemicals, and outdoor elements (sun, heat, rain).
  • Schedule may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays to ensure proper pool coverage.
  • Use of PPE (gloves, goggles, masks) when handling chemicals.
  • Interior and exterior of buildings with potential for guests facing contact.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures inside and outside of the building.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to exert more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or more than 50 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 20 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, stooping and reaching throughout the facility.
  • Ability to stand during the entire shift.

Expected Hours of Work:

  • Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel.
  • Must be flexible to work various days and various shifts of the week to include weekends, holidays, days, nights and overnight.
  • Regular attendance in conformance with the standards which have been established by the hotel from time to time is essential to the successful performance of this position.
  • Ten-to-twelve-hour shifts are sometimes required.

  • No travel required.

Pay Range

$29.43-$31.05 - Base pay offered may vary depending on various factors including but not limited to job related knowledge, skills, and job specific/overall experience.
