Special Education Teacher Assistant (Finance)

Position Overview

The Special Education Teacher Assistant role is responsible for assisting special education teachers by supporting students with diverse learning needs, implementing lesson plans, providing 1:1 or small group instruction, and fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Grade(s): 6th-8th

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Partners closely with classroom teachers and service providers to ensure that all students have equitable access to instruction, a safe and inclusive learning environment, and the supports necessary to reach their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
  • Provide 1:1 or small group academic support to reinforce lessons and learning concepts.
  • Support students by providing 1:1 and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support, with the potential to teach small groups of students.
  • Assist students in completing assignments, projects, and assessments.
  • Aid in the social and emotional development by modeling appropriate behavior and encouraging positive peer interactions.
  • Support students in safely using mobility aids, adaptive technology, or assistive devices.
  • Ensure students' safety and dignity while promoting independence whenever possible.
  • Help maintain a structured, positive, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, transitions, recess, lunch, or other school routines.
  • Implement behavior support strategies under teacher or specialist guidance, including reinforcement systems and de-escalation techniques.
  • Prepare and organize instructional materials, classroom supplies, and adaptive resources.
  • Support technology use to enhance instruction (e.g., tablets, communication devices, learning apps).
  • Adapt classroom activities to meet the needs of students with varying learning abilities.
  • Work closely with the special education teacher and related service providers to implement instructional strategies and accommodations.
  • Support the execution of students' IEPs, documenting progress and providing feedback as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, school staff, and families regarding student needs, progress, and challenges.
  • Assist teachers with instruction, assessments, grading, and other classroom responsibilities.
  • Provide administrative support, including but not limited to copies, hallway duty, organizing classroom materials, etc.
  • Participate in grade level activities and schoolwide functions, events, and trips.
  • Partner with teachers, related service providers, and school leaders to implement IEP accommodations and modifications.
  • Track and share student progress, observations, and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with students, families, and staff as part of KIPP's commitment to partnership and inclusivity.
  • Responsible for managing and reducing risk within the classroom with the support of the Special Education Teacher and seeking assistance when needed to resolve the matter.
  • Complies with all federal, state, local laws and regulations, including those of the NYS Department of Education, Department of Health, and NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
  • Adheres to organization policies and procedures; promotes and supports mission, vision, and values, including developing and participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree or higher preferred.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities strongly preferred.
  • Meets all state and local requirements for paraprofessional or teacher assistant certification (where applicable).
  • Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule outside of regular business hours.
  • Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.

KIPP Capital Region Offers a competitive salary ranging from $39,200 - $44,821.

Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role and longevity within the KIPP network. KIPP Capital Region will evaluate and determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our teacher salary scale at point of hire.
