On-Call Archaeological Field Technician - Southwest U.S. (NM, AZ, TX) (Finance)



The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding On-Call Archaeological Field Technicians to support upcoming cultural resource management (CRM) projects across the U.S. Southwest, including New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. The position is hourly and project-based, with work dependent on ongoing project needs.

Technicians will be responsible for conducting archaeological fieldwork under the supervision of Field Directors or Principal Investigators. Fieldwork may include monitoring, pedestrian surveys, testing, and data recovery. Applicants must be proficient with field methods, documentation, and digital tools.

Location : U.S. Southwest (NM, AZ, TX) - Travel Required

Your Role:

  • Conduct archaeological field investigations including survey, excavation, and monitoring
  • Record archaeological sites using appropriate state forms, digital photography, and GPS data collection (ArcGIS Field Maps)
  • Assist with post-field documentation including site form completion and basic reporting
  • Identify prehistoric and historic artifacts, features, flora, fauna, and human remains
  • Maintain field safety, follow protocols, and contribute to a positive team environment
  • Travel as required for project assignments (primarily in NM, AZ, TX, but potentially elsewhere in the U.S.)
  • Safely operate 4WD vehicles in remote and rugged environments
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field
  • Completion of an accredited archaeology field school
  • Prior CRM field experience (preferred)
  • Familiarity with field methods in the Southwest U.S.
  • Competency in using ArcGIS Field Maps, tablets, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills
  • Ability to carry up to 35 lbs. and hike up to 10 miles/day in challenging conditions
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Current First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

  • Candidates must be physically fit, safety-conscious, and comfortable working long hours outdoors.

Compensation:

Pay commensurate with experience.

Pay Range: $22.00 - $30.00 hour

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience and demonstrated work experience in the above role; skills, certifications, and competencies that align to the specified role; geographic location; and education, as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
