Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor, Obstetric Anesthesiologist - Anesthesiology, McGovern Medical School (Finance)



McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston , a leading academic health center, is seeking an experienced and dedicated Obstetric Anesthesiologist to join our dynamic division. We are a nationally recognized leader in obstetric anesthesia, providing comprehensive and compassionate care to a culturally diverse patient population 24/7 across two major sites: the Women's Center at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital (TMC) and Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital (LBJ).

About Our Division:

Our Obstetric Anesthesiology Division comprises a team of eight core OB fellowship-trained anesthesiologists and 30 faculty members. We collectively provide obstetric anesthesia services for approximately 8500 deliveries annually.

  • Women's Center at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital (TMC): Handles 5400 deliveries per year, with a large majority of high-risk pregnancies. This site serves as the main hub for OB anesthesia training for our fellows, residents, and anesthesiology assistant students. Our UTH Obstetric Anesthesia division at MHH was awarded accreditation as a SOAP Center of Excellence in 2022, recognizing our commitment to excellence in obstetric anesthesia care.
  • Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital (LBJ): Manages 3000 deliveries annually and provides robust training for residents, SRNA-DNP students, and fellows.

We specialize in managing a wide array of high-risk obstetric cases, including patients with morbidly adherent placenta (MAP), cardiac disease, systemic autoimmune disease, bleeding disorders, hypertensive disease, and fetal abnormalities from our fetal center. Our dedicated OB anesthesia clinic, led by core faculty, provides monthly evaluations for these high-risk patients. Approximately 80-85% of our patients receive anesthesia care.

We are proud of our ACGME-certified Obstetric Anesthesia Fellowship program, approved for two fellows, ensuring the next generation of leaders in our field receives exceptional training. Our fellows gain exposure to a large variety of high-risk obstetric cases and multi-disciplinary team approaches in various settings, including the main operating room and HVI, where we collaborate closely with the anesthesia and cardiac team. Fellows also have access to advanced training in Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS), Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Fetal Center cases, and elective rotations with an emphasis on clinical research and scholarly activities.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Providing state-of-the-art obstetric anesthesia services, covering a full range of cases from normal pregnancies to all varieties of high-risk obstetric patients.
  • Engaging in clinical care, bedside and didactic teaching of residents and fellows, and providing expert consultation and collaboration with obstetricians.
  • Contributing to our active clinical research program with ample opportunities to complete and present research findings at national meetings.
  • Participating in collaborative research efforts with our esteemed obstetrical and neonatology departments.

Qualifications:

  • American Board of Anesthesiology Certified or Board Eligible.
  • Completion of an obstetric anesthesiology fellowship or extensive experience in OB anesthesia.
  • Eligible for Texas licensure.
  • Additional advanced training or experience beyond fellowship is welcome but not required.
  • Research experience and interests are preferred but not required .
