Assistant Professor - Sculpture (Finance)

Description:

The School of Art at the University of Houston, a Tier-One public research university, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sculpture to begin Fall 2026.

We seek outstanding candidates with a dedicated commitment to sculpture and an inventive engagement with contemporary practice and theory. This search welcomes practitioners whose interdisciplinary approaches-through performance, installation, digital methods, public art or other areas - engage the evolving landscape of the field and challenge historical understandings of artistic practice by working across media, histories, and material processes.

School of Art faculty are leaders in the field, including MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellows and Fulbright Scholars. The McGovern College of the Arts is home to the visual and performing arts at UH, located in Houston, a thriving and dynamic arts city.

UH expects tenure-track faculty to pursue creative work and research that establish and sustain a nationally recognized profile as a contemporary artist. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to teaching, the ability to serve effectively on departmental and university committees, and the potential for academic leadership. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate studio and seminar classes, developing the sculpture curriculum, and assisting with student recruitment. The successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students from a broad range of backgrounds, fostering curiosity, rigor, and experimentation in their work.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include teaching foundation, intermediate, and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in sculpture, including studio courses for majors in the candidate's area of expertise. Program and departmental service is expected, and the teaching load is 2/3.

Qualifications
MFA in Studio Arts is required, as is an active exhibition record or other evidence of creative practice and its critical reception. At least two years of college-level teaching experience beyond graduate school. Familiarity with art history and theory, as well as contemporary art world practices.
