This position has two vacancies.

The Deputy Chief of Police for the RTD Transit Police Department serves as a key executive leader, responsible for assisting in the management and oversight of all law enforcement and security operations within the RTD transit system. This position ensures the safety and security of passengers, employees, and assets while supporting strategic initiatives, community engagement, and operational efficiency.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential:

  • Assist the Chief of Police in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and programs to enhance transit safety and security.
  • Oversee daily law enforcement operations, including patrol, investigations, emergency response, and crime prevention efforts.
  • Supervise and provide leadership to subordinate commanders, officers, and civilian staff, ensuring accountability and professional development.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to coordinate security efforts and share intelligence relevant to transit policing.
  • Develop and manage budgets, resource allocation, and personnel deployment strategies to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Lead emergency preparedness and incident response initiatives, including crisis management and disaster recovery planning.
  • Oversee internal affairs investigations and ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and procedural standards.
  • Engage with community stakeholders, advocacy groups, and RTD leadership to foster transparency and trust in transit policing.
  • Analyze crime trends and security threats to develop proactive strategies for crime prevention and mitigation.
  • Represent RTD Transit Police at meetings, public forums, and industry conferences

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.
  • 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including at least 5 years in the rank (or equivalent rank) of Lieutenant, or above.
  • Possession of current Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification, or equivalent state or federal certification with ability to obtain Colorado POST certification within 6 months of start date.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver's License within 6 months of start date.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including afternoon and overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.
  • 3 years in the rank (or equivalent rank) of Commander or above.
  • Experience in transit policing, urban policing, or specialized law enforcement environments.
  • Advanced training such as the FBI Executive Leadership Programs, FBI-LEEDA (Command Leadership Institute, Executive Leadership Institute), or Northwestern University's School of Police Staff & Command (SPSC).
  • Substantive knowledge and prior experience in the areas of police policy development, internal affairs, and training instruction.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of law enforcement principles, policies, crime prevention strategies, and emergency management.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills with the ability to manage complex operations.
  • Ability to manage workload effectively, which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with a high attention to detail.
  • Proficient working across multiple operating systems, including intermediate Microsoft Office Suite proficiency.
  • Ability to analyze data, trends, and reports to inform security strategies and policy decisions.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Exceptional supervisory skills, including coaching, counseling and training officers
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with integrity.

The expected salary range for this role is between $197,900 and $229,681.50 , depending on experience. The maximum salary for this position is $229,681.50.

Pay Range:

$162,606.00 - $229,681.50 Annual
