Boring Bar Operator (Finance)

Primary Function: Set up and operate a horizontal boring and milling machine to create and finish metal parts according to technical specifications.

Reports to: Production Supervisor

Responsibilities:

• Receive assignments, drawings, and verbal instructions to understand project requirements.
• Prepare and set up the horizontal boring and milling machine using a variety of tools and equipment, including a rotary table, angle stands, facing head, and boring head.
• Select appropriate feeds and speeds for the machining process.
• Operate the machine to perform various operations such as boring, co-boring, tapping, drilling, reaming, counterboring, and milling.
• Machine parts from both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
• Rework and repair parts as needed to meet quality standards.
• Handle heavy parts safely using a hoist or overhead crane.
• Inspect and measure finished parts using precision tools like micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators to ensure they meet tight tolerances, often as fine as ± .0005 inches.
• Follow blueprints, sketches, and process sheets precisely to achieve the required dimensions and finishes.

Tools & Equipment Used:

• Machinery: Horizontal boring and milling machine, rotary table, angle stands.
• Cutting Tools & Attachments: Facing head, boring head, face mills, arbors.
• Fixtures & Hardware: Clamps, bolts, fixtures.
• Hand Tools: Hammer, wrenches.
• Measurement Tools: Micrometers, verniers, calipers, scales, dial indicators, gages.
• Material Handling: Hoist, overhead crane.
