We are seeking a talented Principal DevOps Engineer to join our Patient Care System (PCS) Software division. As the Principal DevOps Engineer, you will be responsible for the health, observability, and maintainability of our production environment, as well as the auxiliary components that support our day-to-day operations.

The ideal candidate will have a background in observability, cloud-native technologies, system administration, network and storage management, and programming.

This position is in Mounds View, MN within the Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) operating unit and requires on-site presence three days a week.
Day in the Life:

In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Principal Software DevOps Engineer role. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Ensuring that environments are up and running by monitoring availability and performance through a holistic view of system health.
  • Identifying and utilizing Service Level Indicators and Service Level Objectives to meet availability and latency goals, while guiding incremental improvements.
  • Gathering and analyzing metrics from both operating systems and applications to assist in identifying issues and performing root cause analysis for highly impactful incidents.
  • Troubleshooting production incidents, participating in blameless post-mortems, and ensuring thorough follow-up actions.
  • Providing hands-on leadership, coaching, mentoring, and promoting software engineering best practices to junior DevOps engineers.
  • Participating in process improvement initiatives for the software team, including recognizing areas for improvement and collaborating with others to develop and document these enhancements.

Specialized Knowledge Required:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in observability and monitoring.
  • Experience with application performance monitoring tools, such as Dynatrace and Prometheus.
  • Knowledge of best practices for observability and monitoring required to operate Kubernetes at scale.
  • Expertise in maintaining scalable and stable ELK environments.
  • Experience deploying infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) utilities, such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Hands-on experience in developing and maintaining CI/CD automation processes and pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, Flux, GitHub).

Must Have - Minimum Requirements

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS ROLE, PLEASE BE SURE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ARE EVIDENT ON YOUR RESUME

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience with Software Verification and /or Test Systems Development, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of technical experience.

Nice to Have

  • Experience managing cloud scalability or mission-critical environments.
  • A mindset focused on repeatability, testability, observability, and reversibility in all tasks.
  • Prior experience participating in on-call rotation.
  • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with programming languages Java, Python, and C#.
  • Experience with AzDo and or Github
  • Passion for creating high quality software and documentation
  • Strong collaboration and influence skills to succeed in a high matrix environment.
  • Proven ability to operate in a matrix organization and work effectively with senior leadership, customers, and across geographic, cultural and organization boundaries.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$155,200.00 - $232,800.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance , Health Savings Account , Healthcare Flexible Spending Account , Life insurance, Long-term disability leave , Dependent daycare spending account , Tuition assistance/reimbursement , and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
